Web Design for Tourism, Hospitality & Service Businesses in Cairns
I design custom websites for Cairns businesses operating in tourism, hospitality, and service-driven industries.
In a market like Cairns, your website is competing against hundreds of others that all look suspiciously similar – same hero image layouts, the same “experience paradise” copy, and booking widgets that feel like they were installed in 2015. Standing out requires more than just another template.

Struggled for weeks to find someone that seemed to have the aesthetic sensibilities to design our website and eventually found Lawrie. Couldn’t be happier: a designer who communicates perfectly, is not precious about their ideas and basically just ‘gets it’. Also responsive, well-priced and gets the job done. Thanks heaps Lawrie.Posted on Google John Hansen12 December 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’m Lawrence, a web designer who’s spent the last 20+ years building sites for businesses that want something better than the template factory output. I work remotely with Cairns restaurants, tour operators, accommodation providers, and professional services who understand that their website should be as memorable as their actual business.
Some of my recent work
The Cairns Tourism Website Problem
Walk through Cairns digitally and you’ll see the same website over and over with different logos. Every tour operator using the same layout. Every restaurant with identical menu presentations. Every accommodation provider with the same gallery slider that takes five seconds to load on mobile. This kind of sameness shows up in other regional markets too, but it’s especially damaging in places like Cairns, where visitors are often comparing you side-by-side on their phones — unlike more locally driven centres such as Townsville.
This isn’t just aesthetically boring – it’s actively costing you bookings. When someone’s comparing three reef tours or five restaurants for tonight’s dinner, and all the websites look identical, they’re making their decision based on price or random chance. Not because your website convinced them you’re worth choosing.
I build websites that actually differentiate you. Not with gimmicks or flashy animations that slow everything down, but by properly communicating what makes your business different in the first place.
Why Custom Design Matters More in Cairns
Cairns has a unique challenge: you’re marketing to both locals and tourists, often on the same website. Tourists are researching from hotel rooms on their phones with patchy wifi. Locals are checking your menu while deciding where to eat tonight. Your website needs to work for both, fast.
Template sites don’t handle this well. They’re designed for generic businesses in generic locations with generic needs. A reef tour operator has completely different requirements than a cafe, which has different needs than a law firm. Forcing all of them into the same template structure is lazy design.
When I build your site, I’m thinking about your specific audience and how they’ll actually use it. Do you need multi-language support for international tourists? Does your booking system need to handle tidal schedules? Do you need to showcase video content without destroying your load times? These aren’t features you bolt on – they’re considerations from day one.
Investment Range
Small sites for local service businesses start around $2,200. Full tourism or hospitality sites with booking systems, extensive content, galleries, and custom functionality run $5,000-$10,000+.
What you’re paying for is time and expertise – proper design work, custom development, professional copywriting, and technical SEO that actually helps people find you. I quote the project upfront based on scope. That number doesn’t change unless you change what you want.
What you're getting
- Custom WordPress design - built for your business
- Human-sounding copywriting - no corporate jargon
- SEO handled properly - fast loading, mobile-friendly
- Direct access to the designer - me, not a project manager
- Full training: I show you how to update basic content yourself
- 30 days support after launch
How it works
We start with a conversation about what you actually need from your website – not a formal brief or questionnaire, just a chat about your business and what you’re trying to achieve. Then I design it in Figma so you can see exactly what you’re getting before anything’s built. Once you’re happy with the design, I develop it in WordPress and write the copy that doesn’t sound like every other website in your industry. Most projects take 4-6 weeks from that first conversation to launch.
After your site goes live, I don’t vanish. I’ll show you how to handle basic updates yourself, and I’m available if something breaks, you want to add features, or you just need someone to explain why your booking form isn’t working. Simple as that.
Working Remotely With Cairns Businesses
I’m based on the Sunshine Coast but work with distant clients regularly. Everything happens remotely – Zoom calls, Figma sharing, Slack or email for questions. You get direct access to me throughout the project, just without the need to schedule office meetings or site visits.
Some clients prefer never meeting face-to-face. Others want an initial video call to put a face to the name. Whatever works for you works for me.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my industry needs specific features?
That’s the point of custom development. If you’re a tour operator who needs tide tables, or a restaurant that needs dietary filter options, or a medical practice with online intake forms – I’ll build it. I’m not limited to what a template offers.
How long until I can start seeing results?
Your site goes live in 4-6 weeks typically. SEO takes 2-3 months to gain traction – anyone promising faster results is either lying or using tactics that’ll hurt you long-term. Good rankings are built on solid technical foundations and quality content, not shortcuts.
What happens if something breaks after launch?
I’m still available. Either as part of an ongoing maintenance arrangement (most clients do this) or on an as-needed basis. I don’t build sites and disappear – I actually want them to keep working for you.
Can you handle photography or do I need to organise that separately?
I can guide you on what to shoot if you want to DIY it, or I can arrange professional photography if needed. For some industries stock photos are fine if we’re selective. For others – particularly tourism and hospitality – you need original imagery. I’ll tell you which applies to you.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yep. I typically split projects into three payments – deposit to start, second payment when you approve the design, and final payment at launch. For larger projects over $7,500 we can structure it differently if needed. I’m not interested in making payments complicated or stressful – we’ll work out something that makes sense for both of us.
Let's See If We're a Good Fit
Tell me about your Cairns business and what you’re trying to achieve with a new website. If you’ve got a current site, send me the link so I can see what we’re working with. I’ll have a look and let you know honestly whether I think we’re a good match.
No obligation. No sales pitch. Just a straightforward conversation about what’s possible.
